Ambassadors for Jesus- A Catholic Movement Founded by Melvyn Brown

SUCCESS  IS  HOW  YOU  EARN  IT by Melvyn Brown
Founder of a lay Catholic Movement- Ambassadors For Jesus

The highest item on my agenda as a young married man and father of two children was to harbor a challenge to put my life in the service of the Lord. I had always been a conservative: my views are still conservative and traditional. I am always prepared to assist anyone searching for answers , especially on life values , holy Scripture or the Church in the comm-unity .
My wake-up call to take on a mission in 1979,  which I believe was and is from Christ came as a surprise to me. My wife Joan, somehow knew it had been coming. She comforted me to go ahead with it. Joan was a wonderful woman in her own right.  She was  a devout Catholic , prayerful, responsible and took upon herself to pray for those who requested her . The Rosary was a daily routine for her. I was all for the faith , but on a different level. I wrote on religious topics which I felt would help Catholics to better understand their faith. I went around talking to children in schools and in their homes about the Bible , trust in Jesus and I always made it my business to advertise myself and my Catholic faith.
As fate would have it I took a peep into the pit of lay-Catholic spirituality and uncovered a challenge : I discovered that many of the laity were weak in the knowledge of their faith. They were not prepared to stand up for discussion or argument on the Bible and prayers . I decided to start my little mission, to evangelize. I also found out that Christians of other denomination knew their faith better. I made up my mind to lean-over-backwards to get the job done for the lay Catholic.
In matters of the Roman Catholic Faith you cannot take the law into your hands . You needed the approval of Holy Mother the Church. The Church had great and pressing needs all over the world. There was persecution of the Church , abortion issues, and many barriers to religious problems which needed dialogue and tolerance , forgiveness and understanding. I needed to pray and to meditate ,  to restore a fresh perspective on my own vision and desires.
I  went about my routine life : attending to small domestic tasks , office responsibilities , the creative English classes (in schools), the adult education evening classes, preparing the week-end sub-ed work which I did for the Herald (at home, in the nights) and wrote articles for the newspapers (pen-name Wayfarer for the Amrita Bazar Patrika) as a freelance. In those early days many middle-class people worked at two or three jobs to keep the pot boiling. I was one of them.  My wife Joan was the ‘buffer’ I needed. She was my inspiration and the love of my life. Joan gave me the space I needed to do what I did best. My children , Warren and Sabrina were growing up fast and always under their mother’s direction and I put my bit in during the weekends and holidays. I sometimes wish I could have done more .
Summer that year had a seismic effect on most folks in the state : it turned warmer in a leap of time. Restlessness and late night sleep was a sudden mode of routine-change one had to accept. One night at around 2 a.m. I woke in a bath of perspiration and a cold wave ran down my body. The first thought I had was to breathe easily . I started a small prayer in my mind while thinking of my past  thoughts to evangelize the Word. Between the crevices of thought, prayer and worship I got the inspired idea to start a Catholic lay movement. I believe it was the Spirit of God guiding me.
A long week  later I sat down and wrote a letter to the Holy Father Pope John Paul II. The six- page letter explained it all and I asked the Pope for his permission to start a lay movement with the apostolate of Roman Catholic Unification . It would be a silent movement of prayer and action working with and for the people of God.
Six months later His Eminence Lawrence Cardinal Picachy , s.j. , Archbishop of Calcutta, sent for me and said that the Vatican had given permission to start a lay movement. The movement would need a name and a dedication I was told. I had a week to think of both. It would not be easy.
It was a fond habit of mine , once or twice a week to visit the old second-hand book shops near Wellington and the turning of Wellesley street(while on my way to the evening class) in Calcutta, India. That evening providence made me pick up a book and to flip through its pages when a card dropped out of the pages. I picked it up and  found a picture of Divine Mercy . I returned home and showed the image to my dear wife Joan. We made a decision to name my Movement , Ambassadors For Jesus , with dedication to Jesus Divine Mercy.
The Cardinal accepted the name, dedication and the apostolate. I was now officially the Founder.
Next, I became Editor and Publisher of two private circulation , non-profit newsletters for the greater glory of God…….

Spoken English Teacher: Melvyn Brown

TEACHING CONVERSATIONAL ENGLISH : Melvyn Brown the Teacher
Word had got out. The Storyteller would make a good English teacher. My mentor at St. Xavier’s College in the late 1980’s was a Jesuit priest, Fr. Terence Lewis. He had the contact: One of his former students had opened a centre for Spoken English at Chowringhee road, Calcutta. The priest gave me a letter of introduction stating that I was the instructor for his English-speaking course, adding, he is an Anglo-Indian and his mother-tongue is English. He knows the correct forms for pronunciation. It would be the appropriate job for me, I mused. After all, I knew all about inflexion of voice, tone of voice and the proper use of English terms and expressions.
On arriving at the Calcutta Institute, I discovered half –a-dozen gentlemen who had come for the position. Among them were two Anglo-Indians, would my position be precarious?  I produced my letter and went through the ritual of “presenting performance”. An hour later Mr. Sharma stepped out of his office and thanked those present for coming. I suddenly realized that I might have been chosen. I was.
The Institute had started an adult education course and I would be the first teacher to flag the new seminar. I would have to teach them to speak well, to understand the basics of the English language, to pronounce  words as correctly as possible ; and to coach them in the art of human relations. After all, the students were men and women from different professions: doctors , lawyers and salesmen. The women were into teaching, nursing and front-office jobs .
“You have one week to prepare for a four month certificate session, “ said Mr. Sharma , adding “ and remember each class will be conducted for one hour only”’.  I needed more time. So, I spoke up: “ Sir, I require two weeks to complete writing the lessons. “ The Director looked at me, smiled and said, “done”.
Two weeks of hurricane planning, timing each lesson and completing the whole course in record time was accomplished. I was determined to keep my students satisfied. That was my aim.  The spoken English course had deep designs in the art of public relations, code of conduct and life values to consider.  In the long run of a year I was assigned to begin three sessions in the evening: 5pm to 6 p.m.; 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and 8pm to 9p.m. I had to perform at break-neck speed. I worked with a passion which even amazed me. My small family was now doing a little better in living. I still hung on to my regular job at St. Xavier’s college, where I worked till 4.p.m as a Librarian.  By now the courses were working independently with no outside guide books, and every student powered the lessons with their own will and determination. Much had been done and I decided to step down.
Spoken-English schools were rising like a swarm of bees. Across the country the competition grew fast. They were advertising shorter courses of study, less amount of fees and dared to give diplomas. Hook, line and sinker was the new way of thinking. I published my story in The Statesman newspaper, a leading Calcutta daily. Many of my students wanted private coaching in conversational English. Many of them still keep in touch with me. It was an extremely sweet example of a small success to wrap in my repertoire. I now decided to move on with my career; to be the founder of a lay Catholic movement, The Ambassadors for Jesus, after receiving the Blessings of Pope John Paul II  .Now, that is another success story, which I will get back to you later about….

Melvyn Brown- Storyteller

SUCCESS  IS  WHEN  YOU  OVERCOME    By  MELVYN BROWN
Targeting success at any stage in your life is the first step in making a significant victory. Littering your life with hard work minus dedication and passion because you have to, apparently, brings a dull feeling of success. Now, try and plan a scheme well thought out, tested and purged of all unnecessary baggage ; and then put it into operation – the success quotient in this case will be a positive and happy reward.
From very young I earned a reputation for telling exciting stories in school to children of all ages. From fairy tales to folk stories and to the creation of my own efforts from the massive fortress of my creative mind , made many happy. I enjoyed narrating stories which seemed to baffle, amaze and amuse my young and not-so-young friends.
I began to write the stories I weaved in my mind’s web of fantasy. I sent my writings to editors of newspapers and magazines . Many stories were rejected and I kept the rejection slips to use as book-markers. From time to time my efforts were rewarded , and the stories began to appear in print. From the Times of India to the Statesman my dedication to get into print was coming true. The Indo-American Society invited me to tell stories to their children and they organized special programmes for my story-telling sessions. They were the first to call me , the Storyteller.
One thing followed another… I was invited to private birthday parties of children, and even to school concerts in the city. One bright day ALL INDIA RADIO gave me a contract after I passed their voice audition. I became Uncle Melvyn in their weekly programme Calling All Children on Sunday afternoons .  I became popular . The writing of stories did not stop. My scrapbook was soon filling up with all the story cuttings.
At that time the Statesman newspaper in Calcutta, had a Sunday section called the JS for youngsters. I remember  Desmond Doig as its editor. The Junior Statesman decided to sponsor my idea of a STORYTHON , to set a record. It was a challenge for me . The year was 1969. The Storython would be to non-stop tell a story which would be spontaneous , have several characters and have a beginning , a middle and an end. The event was held at  St.Thomas’ School on Kidderpore, Calcutta . I made a record : Three hours and forty seconds. My audience were the children of the school and the judges were their Principal  and two senior teachers . I became the First Indian to create a World Record of three hours and forty minutes of non-stop Storytelling, which has not been broken in all these years. The International Herald Tribune , from Paris, gave mention in their news column.
With the ability to tell a good story, I was given Creative English classes in two Loreto Schools in Calcutta : to make the fairy tales interesting and indirectly teach the children grammar and pronunciation. The idea was a success. Classes were always well attended on Story-class days.  For the Catholic weekly The Herald,  I was given the role of Peter Pan in the Junior Herald , and my task was to write a special letter every week for children. Eventually I became sub-editor for the Junior Herald . All the above activity was done while I held the post of Assistant librarian in St. Xavier’s College , Park Street, Calcutta.
Success is when you overcome. I worked at the things I loved to do ; to tell stories. I also struggled to tie things up with work pressure , meeting deadlines in proof-reading, typing stories and articles, keeping appointments and making new contacts. I was blessed with a wife who shouldered the responsibilities on the domestic front : sending the children to school ( and I had two children, a son and a daughter), cooking, preparing meals, cleaning the house and attending to my phone calls , the postmen and people who came to visit me at home. Because of my dear wife Joan , I could overcome many obstacles.
Ultimately, I collected a few of my fairy tales and self-published them in a book, Dragons and Dreams.  I survived , as another door opened – Spoken English in an Adult-Education Commercial school in Calcutta, India. But that is another story.....
